GEOCITIES' PREMIUM ACCOUNTS MY RECOMMENDATION....
Don't use GeoCities for registering a domain name and hosting it. You can get much better service, features and help almost anyplace else on the web for the same price as GeoCities or less. However, to go this route you need to be making your web pages on your PC. Please see www.godaddy.com as one place to register a domain name and www.hostsearch.com for listing of a vast array of hosts.

IF YOU HAVE GEO PREMIUM ACCOUNT AND NEED TO CHANGE THE DNS....
then please read how to change the DNS names.

EMAIL FOR A GEOCITIES/YAHOO! ACCOUNT....
All email for a free GeoCities or Yahoo! account is handled by Yahoo! Email. You can sign in at
Mail.Yahoo.Com. Use the menu on the left hand side of the screen or read my help page on Yahoo! Email.

COMPARE GEOCITIES BEFORE YOU SIGN UP....
GeoCities has five Premium Accounts. Please see compare GeoCities service and prices with others. There is a comparison of two other hosts out of hundreds of hosts that are available on the web.

A CREDIT CARD IS NEEDED....
All payments for Premium Accounts are charged to a credit card on a monthly basis. If the card expires or is voided, then GeoCities will immediately cancel your Premium Account. If this happens you can try signing up again with a valid credit card and specify that you already have a domain name. There should be a form shown during the sign up that allows you to fill in your domain name. GeoCities will see that they signed you up for the domain name and they shouldn't have any trouble re-establishing a link to your GeoCities file manager, i.e. point the domain name to that site.

YOUR PREMIUM ACCOUNT FILES ARE IN....
Your Premium Account files are in your GeoCities file manager. If you had a free GeoCities home page, then you will still be using that account name to access your Premium Account once it is active.

IT WILL TAKE ABOUT....
It will take about 5-7 business days for a PRO/BUSINESS Premium Account to become active, i.e. have the domain name available on the web. In the meantime you can still use your GeoCities' member name file manager to set up new pages or revise old pages that will be used on the domain name.

PAGE BUILDER USERS....
Page Builder users have an extreme disadvantage when they wish to get their own domain name - they have to use a GeoCities Premium Account as Page Builder made pages can not be edited by any other editor except, perhaps, Front Page (which costs about $100). In addition, since Page Builder pages are only stored online in the file manager, then can not easily transfer the pages to another host.

CHECK THEIR HELP....
One of the main things to look for when selecting a Domain Name and Host is the help they will give you in the future. Sadly, GeoCities' help is severely limited. Except for the most expensive Business accounts, the only help you will get from them is either their online help, which anyone can access, or an email address to a special help desk.

ONE GOOD THING ABOUT GEOCITIES PREMIUM ACCOUNTS....
GeoCities does have one good feature in their Premium Accounts - you pay monthly! Most other hosts will require a one year commitment, which normally will be about $99/year in advance. So, with GeoCities Premium Accounts you can cancel at anytime. However, if you cancel the account and switch to some other host, you must get your password to your domain name manager so you can change the DNS. To see how please read this page carefully: How To Change Your DNS names.

HOW GEOCITIES SETS UP YOUR DOMAIN NAME....
When you sign up for a GeoCities Premium Account, a domain name in automatically included in the monthly price. Your domain name will be registered by GeoCities and it will be in effect for one year. At the end of the year if you continue making the monthly payment, GeoCities will automatically renew your domain name.

DOMAIN NAME MANAGER....
Normally, registrants (companies that register domain names) will give you a domain name manager that allows you to change information associated with the domain name such a name, address, technical contact, etc. GeoCities registers the domain name for you but GeoCities doesn't (a) tell you who is the registrant or (b) give you the password to the domain name manager! You can, however, get the password. Please see how to change your DNS.

Most people will want to keep a domain name once they have it established. So, the tendency is to keep the domain name and the GeoCities Premium Account. Could this be the reason that GeoCities doesn't allow Premium Accounts to access the Domain Name Manager? Please note that if you cancel your Premium Account but retain the domain name, when the re-registration of the domain name comes due in one year you will have to pay $35 for this! You can, however, get around this. Please read how to change your DNS names.
